Issue 62 – July 2009
After careful consultation, Islam Awareness Week (IAW) will coincide this year with the first ever Inter Faith Week in England. IAW was started in 1994 as an annual week-long programme designed to raise awareness and remove misconceptions surrounding Britain's second largest faith group. During the week Muslim communities throughout the country organize activities and events to provide information about their way of life, develop relationships with individuals and institutions, promote social interaction and celebrate Islamic art and culture.
The theme for the IAW 2009 is "Walk the Talk". It is about recognizing our common humanity, celebrating our diversity and respecting each other. A key theme of the Week will be interfaith dialogue, highlighting the ways in which Muslims are working with other faith communities and promoting good interfaith relations as well as engaging with wider society. It will also help the commitment of Muslims to interfaith dialogue and cooperation to be celebrated alongside that of Christians, Jews, Baha'is, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Zoroastrians and people of other faiths and beliefs.
